The University was founded in Denver, Colorado in 1956 by pastors Abram Paul von kerhaus and John Jay Paul Frith. The City University of Colorado became a junior college in 1975 and changed its name to the City College of Colorado the next year. Stephen college became an independent company in 1987 and began to award a four-year degree. In 1990, Colorado City College and Stephen College moved to the 126 acre Denver Campus and began to provide four-year degrees in 1974 (when Colorado City College and Stephen college merged). Colorado City University obtained university status on January 1, 1999.

The Cconroy seminary became a junior college in 1994 and changed its name to the City University of Colorado the next year. Stephen city college became an independent company in 1987 and began to award a four-year degree. In 1990, the City University of Colorado and Stephen City College moved to the 126 acre Denver Campus and began offering four-year degrees in 1974 (when the college merged with the city college company). Colorado City University obtained university status on January 1, 1999.
